The samples used across the EP were chosen not only for their sound, but as a way of exploring how dub reshapes existing material into something new. The EP features a mix of sampled material and royalty-free samples. This approach was initially taken to minimise (when possible) potential sample clearance issues, as i had planned to release the project.
However, once the EP was no longer intended for release, i was able to explore dub’s influence on existing material more freely, particularly through vocal sampling.
Rhythm Over Narrative…..
Vocals were used throughout the project to function rhythmically and texturally, rather than as a means of lyrical narration, all following the blueprint of rhythmic priority laid out by dub music.
The one exception is the Mike Skinner vocal in Sitting Position, which was more a reference to dub’s toasting tradition, with his English accent reinforcing the UK perspective.
There is also a plethora of FX-based samples used throughout the project, utilised within a dub-influenced context…..
